Everything you need to know about football September 14, 2014

It’s almost impossible to think of a single sporting event more popular in the United States (or even across the globe) than the Super Bowl.
It’s known as the “Biggest Game of the Year” for a reason, with hundreds of millions of people tuning in to watch this football game each and every single year. The best two teams in the National Football League go head to head to decide who is the very best on the planet, and it’s always one of the most exciting sporting and cultural events.
This game (as well as the games on Sundays – and especially the Thanksgiving Day games) have helped to really cement football in the culture of America, and football is now widely regarded as the most popular sport in the country.
Bigger than baseball, as well as bigger than basketball and hockey combined, millions and millions of boys and girls are falling in love with football every year – and it’s not that difficult to see why!
The general rules of football
Football games are played with two teams of 11 players on the field at all times.
One team (called the offense) is going to have possession of the football, and will be trying to get that football across the goal line of the end zone so that they can score 6 points.
The opposing team (called the defense) is going to have to do absolutely everything they can to stop the offense from scoring, holding them to four consecutive plays without gaining 10 yards.
The offense will also have an opportunity to kick a field goal good for three points when they are in range, and if they are lucky enough to get into the end zone they’ll have the chance to kick an extra point (worth a single point, obviously) or go for two with a two point conversion.
After a team scores, after a team has punted, or after a team has turned the ball over, possession will “flip”, and the offenses and defensive roles are reversed. Games last for 60 minutes with a single overtime period to decide any and all ties.
Some of the most important football teams in the league today
Even though football is one of the “newest” sports in America, it’s become the most popular sport in the country because of the influx of world-class talent and the creation of “dynasty teams” that are head and shoulders above almost all others.
We’re talking about the New England Patriots (led by Tom Brady at quarterback and Bill Belichick coaching), the Denver Broncos (led by Peyton Manning, one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time), the Pittsburgh Steelers (the winningest franchise in history as far as championships are concerned), the Green Bay Packers (one of the most popular teams on the planet), and the Dallas Cowboys (which even though they’ve gone through a bit of a rough spot recently still own the moniker “Americans Team”).
Games are played every Sunday and most Thursdays and Mondays, and if you’ve never been to a live game and experienced this action in person you just don’t know what you’re missing out!
